THE TEAM

Our vision to bring affordable and sustainable fashion to customers in our markets is powered by technology and data. The GFG Data Team is an integral part of GFG and is essential to enabling a data-driven decision-making culture.

SCOPE OF ROLE

You will join a cross-functional data platform team building and operating analytics and ML-ready data products on a cloud lakehouse. Day-to-day you’ll handle BAU tickets, improve reliability and performance of Spark-based ETL/ELT jobs (Iceberg tables), design logical and physical data models, and collaborate with analysts, ML engineers, and SREs to deliver robust data solutions.

HOW YOU’LL SUCCEED

  • Pipeline Ownership: Maintain, troubleshoot, and enhance Spark ETL/ELT jobs that read/write Iceberg lakehouse tables.
  • BAU Support: Triage and resolve business-as-usual requests and incidents from stakeholders; operate within SLAs and maintain incident docs/runbooks.
  • Performance Optimization: Profile and optimize Spark jobs, partitioning and Iceberg layout to reduce cost and latency.
  • Data Modeling: Design and implement logical and physical data models for analytics and ML needs; enforce data quality and schema evolution best practices.
  • Orchestration & Scheduling: Build and maintain DAGs in Apache Airflow (or Cloud Composer); ensure reliable scheduling and monitoring.
  • Cloud & Infra Support: Work with Terraform and GCP to deploy/maintain resources; collaborate with platform/SREs for infra changes.
  • Container Awareness: Package jobs/worker images, understand GKE deployments and debugging basic pod/container issues.
  • Collaboration & Documentation: Partner with analysts, data scientists, and platform teams; write clear runbooks, design docs, and onboarding materials.
  • Observability & Cost Management: Implement monitoring, logging, and cost controls for data workloads.

What success looks like

  • 30 days: Understand platform, critical pipelines, and BAU queue; triage and resolve common incidents.
  • 90 days: Own several pipelines end-to-end; deliver at least one measurable optimization (runtime or cost).
  • 6 months: Lead design for a new data model or a significant pipeline refactor; reduce BAU ticket volume via automation/documentation.

WHAT IT TAKES

  • Experience: 3–5 years working as a data engineer, analytics engineer, or similar role.
  • Spark: Strong, hands-on experience with Apache Spark (PySpark or Scala) at scale.
  • Iceberg / Lakehouse: Practical experience with Apache Iceberg or equivalent table formats.
  • Airflow: Proven experience building/operating DAGs in Airflow.
  • SQL & Data Modeling: Strong SQL skills and experience designing schemas for analytics/BI/ML.
  • GCP familiarity: Production experience on Google Cloud Platform.
  • Communication: Ability to translate stakeholder needs into reliable pipelines and clear documentation.

How to stand out of the crowd:

  • Working knowledge of Terraform for basic infra changes.
  • Familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes (GKE) for deploying data services — not the primary evaluation axis.
  • Experience with data-quality tools (Great Expectations, Deequ) and catalog/lineage tools.
  • Exposure to query engines (Trino, Spark SQL) and catalogs (Hive metastore, Unity Catalog).
  • Cost-optimization experience for cloud ETL (cluster sizing, preemptible VMs).
